On view until 7th May 2017, Hauser & Wirth Somerset presents a major solo exhibition of sculpture by the late Elisabeth Frink. Alongside this, Hauser & Wirth are pleased to announce a new exhibition by Djordje Ozbolt, following the artist's residency with the gallery in 2016, at The Maltings Studios in Bruton.

In Ozbolt's 'Brave New World', the visitor is sent on a journey through a variety of landscapes filled with a selection of curiosities, traditions, culture and characters. Ozbolt is known for his playful subversion of history, memory and contemporary culture.

I was most struck by 'Brave New World', you are transported into a dramatic painted jungle filled with a vast array of cast resin figures in the most fabulous colour palette, from powder blues to magenta pink. These reference German folklore, African tribal art and oceanic artefacts. The feeling that all these figures standing together are looking out to the jungle, united in their search.

Elisabeth Frink. Transformation.

Having studied and lived in Winchester for many years, I have been aware of the work of Elisabeth Frink, passing her well known Horse & Rider sculpture daily on my walk through town. I was delighted to hear that Hauser & Wirth are presenting a major solo exhibition of her distinctive bronzes alongside a series of drawings. Her work is directly influenced by her experiences growing up in rural Suffolk, set against a backdrop of war. Frink's range of subjects included men, animals and birds, exploring their shapes to convey tension, aggression and vulnerability.

Both these exhibitions are highly worth visiting. I really enjoyed the contrast of the two artists alongside each other. The playful nature and bright colour of Ozbolt's work primes you for the stark contrast of the powerful bronzes of Frink.
